The saying that beauty is skin deep may not be entirely true but healthy skin is one of the most important ingredients for beauty-enhancement. We generally tend to associate skin care to just good looks but there are multiple benefits associated with a healthy skin.

Glowing, healthy skin can do wonders for your appearance and self-esteem.

Gift manufacturing companies know that the packaging is as important as the gift itself - and the same principle holds good for you too. Your outer-self, i.e. your skin, is as important as your inner-self. Nearly everyone understands the importance of skin care, which is why there are so many skin care products in the market which seem to do pretty well.

Skin care products are designed specifically for different types of skin so it is important to know what type of skin you have. So you will have different skin care products for oily skin, skin care products for dry skin, skin care products for sensitive skin etc. If you use the wrong skin care product for your skin the results will not be as effective as using one formulated for your exact skin type.

It is not just about skin care products though because there are some basic methods of skin care which can improve the condition of your skin without spending a fortune. Some have the added bonus of improving your health, which is vital for a healthy skin too. So let's see what these basic skin care tips are:

Cleanse your skin regularly

This helps in getting rid of the dirt and other harsh elements from your skin. Cleansing is especially important when you have been out of your house (and hence exposed to pollutants, dust etc). Make sure the water is not too hot or too cold to avoid damage to your skin. Be gentle, after all it's your skin. Don't scrub/exfoliate too hard or too often. Similarly, don't apply too much or too many skin cleaning products as excessive cleaning can damage the skin by washing out the natural oils, change the pH value of the skin and cause dermatitis.

Keep your skin moist at all times

This is one of the most important skin care tips. Don't let your skin get dry which can cause the outer layer of your skin to break, leading to a rough and unattractive appearance. Moisturizers will reduce roughness and scaling and work best when applied while the skin is still damp. Avoid the use of soap on your face. Soap should only be used from below the neck.

Drink plenty of water

Such a simple idea but it works. Water will do wonders for your skin and therefore your looks! It removes impurities and toxins from your skin, leaving you with a clear, glowing complexion. It also makes your skin look younger. Skin that is becoming saggy, either due to aging or weight loss, plumps up very nicely when the skin cells are hydrated.

Your water consumption should be spread out throughout the day as it's not a good idea to drink too much water at one time. Have a big glass of water three or four times a day when you can, and then sip in between. Don't let yourself get thirsty as that is a sign that you're already becoming dehydrated.

Protect your skin from the sun

Use sunscreen to protect yourself from sun's harmful UV radiation. Too much sun is damaging to your skin and UV radiation is known to cause skin cancer, so this is also an important health tip as well as a beauty tip. You can use daytime moisturizers that have sunscreen built into them. Use them even when it's cloudy as UV radiation can penetrate cloud cover.

Exercise and plenty of sleep.

A bit of exercise and plenty of sleep are essential too, not just for skin care but for your health as a whole. Lack of sleep can lead to the formation of dark circles and wrinkles below your eyes, and lack of exercise can cause your skin to lose tone. Exercise and sleep are helpful in combating stress, which can have an effect on your entire body and therefore your skin.

Everyone knows the harmful effects of stress on the body however, sometimes stating the obvious is important too. Yes, stress harms skin as well. Relax, take a break, indulge in a warm bubble bath, or just get good nights sleep.

Finally, treat all skin problems with care.

If you have a persistent skin problem then it is sensible to consult a dermatologist before you decide use a skin care product in case you end up harming your skin even more. For people with sensitive skin, the need for proper cleaning and moisturizing is even more critical. Using too harsh a cleanser or an inappropriate moisturizer can, in many cases, make certain skin conditions worse and can cause dermatitis and other problems.
